Talk about more than the plot
A memorable character, setting, sentence or question can open a discussion without retelling the whole book. Say why it mattered to you and invite other members to add their view.
Welcome every kind of reader
Printed books, ebooks and audiobooks all count. Some people read every day while others are returning after years away. Curiosity matters more than how quickly or widely somebody reads.
Share books lawfully
Recommend legitimate shops, libraries and authorised services. Do not post pirated copies or large extracts, and avoid sharing private account details when helping another member find a title.
Make book conversation easy to enter
Ask what somebody is reading now, which book they have recommended more than once or what they enjoyed as a child. These questions welcome both keen readers and people who have not finished a book recently.
If somebody asks for a recommendation, find out what mood, length or subject they want. A thoughtful suggestion with one clear reason is more helpful than a long list of titles.
Discuss ideas without turning the room into a test
Readers notice different things. Ask what led another member to their view before arguing against it, and separate criticism of a book from judgement of the person who enjoyed it.
Mention spoilers before discussing a late revelation or ending. When a book covers grief, abuse or another difficult subject, give a calm warning without demanding that anybody explain a personal experience.
