The United States spans many time zones and many ways of life. Someone from a large city may have a very different Friday from somebody in a small town, but a good question can bring them into the same conversation.

A US voice in a wider room

ChatFriends began in Britain and already has visitors from the United States. You can arrive without knowing the UK geography or the latest British television programme. Tell people about the place you know, ask about theirs and follow the subjects you both enjoy.

The same chat space brings together adults from different countries. This USA page helps you find it and gives you a few ways to begin; it does not send you into an empty room set aside for one country.

Find common ground across the states

Music, food, sport, films and travel make easy starting points. Even within the US, people have different names for favourite dishes, different local teams and completely different ideas of a short drive.

Ask about a city someone loves or a place they would revisit. A person may have grown up on the East Coast, worked in the Midwest and now live out West. Their story is more interesting than a list of state names.

Come by at a time that suits your day

Because the community is based in the UK, the room can feel different depending on when you visit from the US. An American afternoon may overlap with a British evening. Try a few times and notice when you enjoy the conversation most.

Return to a subject you liked and greet the people you recognise. That is how a large room begins to feel more personal.

  • What would you show a visitor on their first day in your state?
  • Which local food deserves a wider audience?
  • Is there a journey across the US you would happily make again?
